In a recent report to DEFRA, a team of leading environmental biologists highlighted the need to make space for nature in Britain by establishing a “coherent and resilient ecological network”. Small scale habitat patches are a crucial part of this network.
The OUSU Biodiversity campaign is focussing on habitat patches that will favour our valuable native bees. Bees contribute £165m a year to the British agricultural economy and are important for food security, pollinating a third of everything we eat.
So, we’re aiming to establish a network of ‘nectar beds’ across Oxford. These beds will contain native plants that will provide nectar and pollen from March to November, making Oxford a great place to bee!
Please do get in touch to enrol on the ‘Beds for Bees’ programme. All you need is some land and some enthusiasm! Contact us and we’d love to work with you to get a nectar bed in place in your college.
