Sustainable Food
Good to know:
- 20 - 30% of climate change emissions come from food and agriculture.
- Animal farming globally causes more greenhouse gas emissions than cars, lorries and planes combined.
- 1/3 of the food produced in this world is wasted between farm and fork.
- 3/4 of the world's fish stocks are depleted or severely overfished.
- 2.5 billion people in the developing work depend on agriculture, many on exports. Thus fairer trading rules are crucial, while too much a focus on food miles is unfair and harmful.
What can I do?
- Lobby your college caterers to only use sustainable fish (MSC-certification is a good standard), and to use seasonal produce.
- Eat less meat, and invite others to join in. Promote Part-Time Carnivore: http://www.parttimecarnivore.org/
- Join Foodjustice to reduce food waste through campaigning and hands-on volunteering: http://oxfordhub.org/node/3632
- Promote Fairtrade in your college.
